Khosla Invests in Liquid Metal Battery, Joins Bill Gates and Total

Bangalore: The venture capital firm co-founded by Vinod Khosla is leading a $15 Million second round funding towards Liquid Metal Battery. Started by MIT professor Donald Sadoway, the company has already bagged investments from high profile investors like Bill Gates and the oil giant Total by developing batteries that would empower devices ranging from Cellphones to Space equipments.

The company uses molten salt sandwiched between layers of liquid metal to produce batteries for power grids. Though the commercialization of the product might take more than a year or two but Donald’s team is steadfast on developing stable, scalable and low cost electrodes for the grids.

Khosla Ventures that started in 2004 is famous for its venture investments in startups related to internet, silicon technology and clean technology. Bill Gates is also a limited partner in the company that has made commendable risk based investments in large markets.

Liquid Metal Battery attracted investors after the former Microsoft CEO emailed Donald to meet and share details of the technology. Gates had taken the whole 34 lectures series of the MIT professor on the batteries.

“Right now the grid has very little energy storage and power plants are basically producing the exact amount of energy that buildings and systems are consuming in real time. That makes the grid inefficient and also costly. The bulk of the development work left to do at Liquid Metal Battery will be focused on getting the cost of the battery down and figuring out the optimal size and shape,” reported Gigaom about the proposed future prospects of Liquid Metal Batteries.
