Delhi Capitals Bank on Faf du Plessis for Vice-Captaincy Role in IPL 2025
Experienced South African batsman Faf du Plessis has been appointed vice-captain of Delhi Capitals for the 2025 Indian Premier League season. The team announced the appointment through its social media channels on Monday.
"Right now? I'm home, where would I be otherwise? Yes, that's true, I am vice-captain of DC and I am very much excited. Delhi has been fantastic, the boys have been wonderful, definitely feel content and I feel prepared", du Plessis said in a video posted by the franchise.
The Delhi franchise acquired du Plessis for his base price of Rs 2 crore in last year's Jeddah mega auction, following his release from Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) before the auction.
With this change, du Plessis is now likely to be a regular starter in DC's playing eleven and will be helping captain Axar Patel take important decisions both on and off the field. Having captained South Africa at the international level and RCB from 2022 to 2024, du Plessis has lots of experience under his belt that he can now bring to the leadership team.
In his time as RCB captain, du Plessis captained the team in 42 games, winning 21 and losing 21 with a parity in wins and losses of 1.000. RCB under him played two times in the playoffs but lost the Eliminator on both those occasions. In the last five seasons of the IPL, he has scored 2,718 runs in 74 innings.
Du Plessis and Axar will be closely assisted by DC's new coaching setup, which has Hemang Badani as head coach, Venugopal Rao as director of cricket, Munaf Patel as bowling coach, Matthew Mott as assistant coach, Kevin Pietersen as mentor, and Gnaneswara Rao and Anton Roux as fielding coaches.
Delhi Capitals will start their IPL 2025 season against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at Visakhapatnam's ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium on March 24. DC is one of the remaining three franchises, together with Punjab Kings and Royal Challengers Bengaluru, without an IPL trophy to their name.
