Cigarette Brand Logos Easily Recognized by Indian kids aged 5-6

Bangalore: A surprising fact about today’s generation is that they are great brand-detectors. A new study states that about two-thirds of young children in low and middle-income countries can identify cigarette brand logos, reports Business Standard.

The study from researchers at the University Of Maryland School Of Public Health and the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health has inspected the reach of tobacco and cigarette marketing among children between the age group of 5 and 6 years. The study has been carried out in countries like Brazil, China, India, Nigeria, Pakistan and Russia.

Dr. Dina Borzekowski, the lead of the study said this issue is of great concern as many children were familiar with at least one cigarette brand. Those kids who do not have smokers in their households also were quick in identifying tobacco logos.

"Regulations created by the World Health Organization to restrict tobacco advertising exist outside of the United States, but beyond our country's borders these regulations may not be as effective," Borzekowski explained, referring to the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control.
