Virtual Desktop Infrastructure: Two Sides of a Coin

1. Feature: Single Image
Explanation: A single image can be used to deploy upgradation of software in several workstations.
Advantage: The use of single image for employing upgrades in several workstations in an organization reduces the administrative and management overhead and reduces costs.
The Other Side: For users who need their personal settings to be private or those who requires the freedom of installing and using their own applications, a unique image will be needed and this will lead to bulk of storage area consumption on the VDI server.

2. Feature: Shift In Processing
Explanation: As VDI comes into practice the individual workstations will not be alone responsible for processing tasks. Instead, the processing will take a shift towards the VDI server.
Advantage: With VDI there will not be any need to upgrade several systems to meet the hardware requirements.
The Other Side: The initial investment that is required in setting up the server hardware and enhancing it with the network infrastructure is very high. The initial cost required can go beyond the total cost of the PC’s installed in the company.
