India's Adani Total has not yet completed feasibility studies to double the capacity of its liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in Dhamra, Chief Executive Surjeet Singh Lamba said. The France's TotalEnergies SE and Adani Group joint venture had made early-stage expansion plans last year.
The 5 mtpa LNG terminal on the east coast of India had an average utilization of 25% in 2024, which has now risen to around 50%, Lamba stated. The terminal, though, has not been able to sign new customers other than its 20-year take-or-pay contracts in 2023 with state-owned companies Indian Oil Corp and GAIL (India) Ltd.
Lamba stated that any expansion would depend on demand growth. He referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s goal of increasing natural gas’s share in India's energy mix to 15% by 2030 but emphasized that feasibility studies were necessary before committing to an expansion.
"It is based on the users' requirement. Once feasibility is completed, then only we can comment on that", Lamba stated on the sidelines of India Energy Week.
He made no announcements about financing. TotalEnergies, meanwhile, which owns a 50% interest in the venture, had suspended investment in the Adani Group following charges by U.S. prosecutors that company executives, including Chairman Gautam Adani, had been corrupt.
