Adani Green Energy Limited (AGEL) has secured the top position in the ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) ratings within the power generation, utilities, and transmission sector, as announced by NSE Sustainability Ratings & Analytics Ltd, a subsidiary of the National Stock Exchange (NSE). AGEL also ranks among the top five ESG-rated companies from the top 100 NSE-listed firms by revenue.
The NSE’s ESG ratings, recently launched, aim to evaluate listed companies based on transparent, materiality-driven methodologies aligned with both national and international sustainability standards. According to NSE Sustainability Ratings & Analytics Ltd, AGEL achieved an impressive ESG score of 74 the highest in its sector highlighting its strong sustainability credentials.
AGEL performed exceptionally across all three ESG pillars. In governance, the company scored 76, reflecting robust board practices, ethical business conduct, and effective risk management. The governance strength further emphasizes AGEL’s dedication to transparency and compliance. Chairman Gautam Adani reaffirmed this commitment in the company’s FY25 annual report, stating, “Our governance is of global standards, and our compliance frameworks are robust and non-negotiable”.
On the social front, AGEL earned a score of 73, showcasing its dedication to employee well-being, customer safety, and community engagement. The company’s responsible sourcing policies and efficient supply chain management further illustrate its holistic approach to sustainability.
The NSE’s ESG assessment system evaluates more than 2,000 data points per company, ensuring depth and accuracy. The agency was officially approved as a Category 1 ESG Ratings Provider by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) on August 13, 2024.
AGEL’s leadership in ESG is not limited to national rankings. Internationally, the company has earned top honours from multiple ESG rating agencies. It ranks No. 1 in Asia and among the top five globally in the renewable energy sector under the ISS ESG’s highest 'Prime Band A-' rating, with a Decile Rank of 1. Sustainalytics also places AGEL among the top 10 globally, while S&P Global’s 2023 Corporate Sustainability Assessment ranks the company in the 92nd percentile among 266 electric utility firms worldwide.
Further, AGEL has held the top spot in CRISIL’s ESG power sector rankings for three consecutive years, and FTSE Russell places the firm in the 93rd percentile globally within the Utilities Supersector.
