- Meta invests $14.3 billion in Scale AI, gaining a 49% stake and boosting Scale’s valuation to over $29 billion.
- Scale CEO Alexandr Wang joins Meta to work on its superintelligence initiative, while Jason Droege becomes interim CEO.

In a bold move to accelerate its artificial intelligence ambitions, Meta has announced a $14.3 billion investment in AI startup Scale, bringing the company’s valuation to over $29 billion. The strategic partnership, revealed Thursday, marks a significant step by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg to reenergize the company’s AI efforts amidst stiff competition from tech giants like Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI.
As part of the deal, Meta will acquire a 49% stake in Scale, while the startup will remain an independent entity. The collaboration is expected to greatly expand the commercial relationship between the two companies. A notable development in the agreement is the transition of Scale CEO Alexandr Wang to Meta, where he will join a specialized team focused on building 'superintelligence' Meta’s vision aligned with the broader tech industry’s pursuit of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).
Wang, who co-founded Scale in 2016 at just 19 while studying at MIT, will continue to serve on Scale’s board of directors. He will be replaced by interim CEO Jason Droege, the company’s former chief strategy officer with past leadership experience at Uber Eats and Axon.
This move echoes a growing trend in Silicon Valley where major tech firms acquire top AI talent and capabilities without full acquisitions. Microsoft previously brought on Inflection AI Co-founder Mustafa Suleyman to lead its AI division, while Google integrated leaders from Character.AI and Amazon struck a deal with Adept, gaining access to its AI systems and hiring key personnel.
Meta’s pivot toward “superintelligence” follows its earlier pivot to the metaverse in 2021, a vision that saw billions invested in virtual and augmented reality. Now, with AI innovation reshaping the tech landscape, Meta is signaling its commitment to leading the next frontier of intelligence.
The partnership with Scale positions Meta at the center of the race toward building next-generation AI systems capable of human-level reasoning a critical step in the evolving battle for AI supremacy.
