Intel CEO sees Net boosting

The Internet is posing a challenge to the existence of compact discs, film cameras, and numerous other technologies. At the Consumer Electronic Show, Intel CEO Paul Otellini remarked on this portending situation. Otellini thinks this situation might not develop to its full strength unless four obstacles are overcome: silicon needs to become more powerful and energy efficient, broadband access needs to be ubiquitous, the Internet needs to be infused with a sense of context, and user interfaces need to be more natural.

Addressing the silicon challenge Otellini unveiled Intel’s first ‘system on a chip’, which is designed for consumer
electronics manufacturers and will be available in the second half of 2008. Code-named Canmore, the product is intended for use in TVs, set-top boxes, and media players to allow, among other things, the integration of Internet applications.

Otellini also orchestrated the first virtual jam session to demonstrate how the pervasive Internet connectivity and powerful processors will enable new social interactions. Otellini demonstrated how a social-networking site could allow musicians around the world to work out new songs or offer virtual concerts.
