Google eyes wireless spectrum

The company is willing to pay $4.4 billion or more for the access. Meanwhile, Google is testing an advanced wireless network at its headquarters. Though Google recently announced free operating software for cell phones, which it hopes will boost mobile Internet use and ad sales, Android will run well on all existing data networks as well as on any other open versions that might result from the FCC auction.

If successful, Android could make cell phones much more useful for browsing the Web, finding information on the go, and staying connected with others online. Android will be available on cell phones beginning next year.
