Apple, the consumer electronics giant, has unveiled iPod nano and iPod touch, the new versions of its popular iPod music player., but has failed to evoke excitement among the finicky investors.

Available in three versions—8GB, 16GB and 32GB, the new Nano is thinner than previous models and slightly curved. The display screen changes orientation from horizontal to vertical depending on how you hold the device. iPod nano incorporates Apple’s technology that automatically creates playlists from songs in the music library. The technology is put to fun use with the “Shake to Shuffle” feature, in which a quick jiggle of the nano will enable the user to skip through tracks and pick a random song.

An 8GB version priced at Rs. 9,700 and a 16GB version at Rs.12,500 are expected to be launched this month in India. The 32GB iPod touch is expensive but aims to target people who download a lot of games or the movie buffs. The new iPod touch is designed to provide up to 36 hours of music playback or six hours of video playback on a single charge.

Apple has sold more than 184 million iPods since their 2001 debut. But sales of the iPod, which once accounted for nearly half of Apple’s annual revenue, had flattened out by last Christmas. Even as Apple launched the new versions of iPod investors signaled their thumbs down, as they saw no sweeping changes in products and pricing by the company. Consequently, the company’s shares fell three percent at the end of Steve Jobs’ speech.
