Rabindranath Tagore

Monday, November 1, 1999
The son of philosopher Debendranath Tagore, he began to write poetry as a child. His first book appeared when he was only 17. He was knighted in 1915, but returned his decoration after the Amritsar Massacre.

Tagore was also responsible for the establishment of the Visva Bharati school in Bengal, whose hallowed portals taught a blend of Eastern and Western philosophy. He also traveled and lectured around the world. Much of Tagore's poetry is in Bengali, though many of his works have been translated into several languages - he translated them into English himself. Tagore also composed several hundred songs and painted. He wrote what are now the national anthems for both India and Bangladesh.
