Watch Out for Identity Theft While Banking Online

4. Phishing

Many banks repeatedly remind their customers that they will never ask for login information online or through SMS.

Some people do fall prey to such mails because of the genuine looking company email and URLs or the sense of urgency created when they "have to login now" to prevent the account from being de-activated or to look into suspicious purchases.

Older browsers use the "Lock" icon or the "https" prefix on the address bar to denote that the connection between your browser and the site is secured. However, the fake website may also have a security encryption and your browser will still show the padlock icon. Browsers like Chrome and Firefox have made a list of banking sites that have been verified. When you open that website, a horizontal bar on the left confirms that the site does in fact belong to the bank.
