58 Pct Smokers In India Without Health Coverage: Survey


Bangalore: Smoking, mainly of tobacco, is a habit in which almost one third of the adult population is involved. Smoking not only results into adverse health affects, but smokers also have to pay more for their health insurance premiums. A survey conducted by ICICI Lombard revealed that about 58 percent of the smokers in India are without any health insurance.The survey was conducted in association with GfK Mode and is called the ‘ICICI Lombard Smoking Habits 2013’ which was released on ‘The World No Tobacco Day.’ The survey also talks about the average age at which most people start smoking, factors which prompt most people to smoke, frequency of smoking etc.

The survey also revealed city based data which showed that Delhi contains a significantly lower rate of smokers who are insured, which is merely about 34 percent and Bangalore 28 percent. Mumbai and Kolkata stand at better positions with 59 and 49 percent.

The survey further stated that around 68 percent of the smoking population in Delhi and Mumbai, 50 percent prefer to buy health insurance on their own, whereas 52 percent people in Bangalore are likely to rely upon their parents or family.
