Where do we stand? Irrespective of the hard public opinion at home, India has already conveyed its support for the Palestinian related resolution on August 11, 2011. In a meeting between Indian Deputy Foreign Minister E. Ahamed and Palestinian Ambassador to India, India openly supported the Palestinian resolution.

India was the first non-Arab state to recognize Palestine in 1998. India has also supported NAM resolutions on the need for the prompt establishment of a Palestinian state. It has also actively participated in NAM Committee meetings on Palestine. India also voted in the favour of the Febraury 18, 2011 draft resolution, terming Israeli settlement policies as "illegal". Given its history on supporting Palestinian related issues, India as a non-permanent member of Security Council is sure to support the present Palestinian resolution, even though the public has not been openly supportive of the issue. This disparity between the Government and public was also seen in U.S., with Americans openly supporting the Palestinian cause. This may bring a ray of hope among the Palestinians as public opinion is going to play a major role this time around on the stance taken by respective governments.
