War of Words in LS Polls 2014: 5 Most Shocking Comments Made By Politicians

Boys commit mistakes at times, wrong to hang rapists: In a crucial time when security of women is a major issue and concern in India, Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav gives a highly insensitive and controversial statement. According to him, it was wrong to give capital punishment to rapists. The statement was given to oppose the new anti-rape law and Yadav said that his party would change the law that entails death for rape.
Addressing a rally in Moradabad, Mulayam said, "Rape accused should not be hanged. Men make mistakes," reports TOI.

The SP chief further cites the recent example of a court sentencing three men found guilty of gang-raping two women in the abandoned Shakti Mills in Mumbai last year. He said there was a need to change the new rape law that provide death sentence to repeat rape offenders.
On the other hand, the remarks coming in the midst of a Lok Sabha poll campaign were condemned as "insensitive and unfortunate” by other political parties. The Congress said, “We condemn Mulayam Singh's statement. There should be zero tolerance for rape and crime against women."
Kiran Bedi, slamming Mulayam's statement, said, "This statement is not just against women, it is against the society. They should be punished with no votes," reports TOI.
