Urbanites Spend 84 Pct More Than Rural Indians: Survey

The five Indian states with 57 percent share of food at the state level include Assam, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal and Odisha that account for 61 percent, 59 percent, 58 percent, 57 percent and 43 percent of food share respectively.

Kerala and Punjab have the lowest food share for the rural sector contributing to only 43 percent and 44 percent.

The shares in terms of total consumption expenditure of most of the food item groups are mostly higher in rural India than in urban India, with the fruits and processed food being an exception.

NSS survey on consumer expenditure is conducted quinquennially through a number of reports. The 68th round was the ninth round on the subject which mainly aims at producing estimates of household monthly per capita expenditure (MPCE) and its allocation, separately for the rural and urban areas of the country, for States and Union Territories, and for various socio-economic groups.

The sample consists of 7,469 villages in rural areas and 5,268 urban blocks spread over all States and Union Territories except in far off villages of Nagaland and remote villages in Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
