Urbanites Spend 84 Pct More Than Rural Indians: Survey


But on the other hand, the urbanites spend lesser on food with only 1,121 or 46.6 percent. Their expenses amount more on non-food items at Rs 1,509.

The highest expenditure for rural Indians is on food items like cereals and cereal substitutes, milk and milk products, beverages, refreshments and processed food, fuel and light, clothing and footwear for which they spend Rs 154, Rs 115, Rs 113, Rs 114 and Rs 100 respectively.

Education, transportation, house rent and entertainment are some of the things where the urban people are keenly emptying their pockets. So, the highest spending of Rs 236 is on beverages, refreshments and processed food, followed by education, transportation, house rent and entertainment amounting to Rs 182, Rs 171, Rs 164 and Rs 152 respectively.

On other products like cereals and cereal substitutes, milk and milk products, fuel and light and clothing and footwear urbanites spend Rs 175, Rs 184, Rs 176 and Rs 167 respectively.

During the year 2011-2012, the expenditure on food both in cities and rural areas had considerably gone down when compared with the total consumer expenditure.

63.2 percent of the total consumer expenditure in 1993-94 to 48.6 percent in 2011-1012 declines are witnessed from rural India. But in the case of urban areas, there is a decline from 54.7 percent to 38.5 percent during that time.
