UP's Khaki Men behind 80 Pct Illegal Arrests in the Country

Human rights activists are of the opinion that the actual figures might be much higher than the given figures as the data were concerned with only those that were taken up by the National Human Rights Commission.

Devika Prasad, senior programme officer at a Delhi-based NGO said, “There are a large number of cases that are never reported for various reasons,” reported DNA. “NGOs and the government need to work harder to keep a check on police misconduct,” added Prasad.

Uttar Pradesh also witnesses the most number of illegal detention cases. From the 3,815 such cases taken up by the NHRC, 2,948 were reported from the state. The condition is worsening day by day by day as the number of cases which were recorded at 728 in the previous year has come up to 1,331 this year. It is time for the state government to take measures before the situation gets out of hand.
