Prominent Personalities Who Were Once Refugees

2. The Dalai Lama:

Dalai Lama, the current leader of the Gelug or "Yellow Hat" branch of Tibetan Buddhism, is the longest lived incumbent. In religious terms, the Dalai Lama is believed by his devotees to be the reincarnation of spiritual leaders chosen to be reborn for enlightening others. But this spiritual leader was forced to leave his country with the outset of the Tibetan uprising by the Chinese army in 1959. So, fearing for his life, the Dalai Lama and his followers fled Tibet with the help of the CIA's Special Activities Division, crossing into India on 30 March 1959. After some time, he set up the Government of Tibet in Exile in Dharamshala, India and the place is often referred to as “Little Lhasa.”

3. Wyclef Jean:

A three-time Grammy Award-winning Haitian-American rapper, Wyclef Jean left his home in Haiti at the age of 9 for the United States, eventually resettling in New Jersey. His refugee story gave an inspiration to his music since the very beginning of his career. He was a member of the popular and critically acclaimed hip-hop group known as Fugees (taken from the word “refugees”). Since then, Jean has gone on to have a successful solo music career. Not just this, he still connects himself with his country by being an advocate for development in Haiti.
