Octa-core Processors Are "Dumb": Qualcomm

On its processor,"The chip has enhanced multi-tasking capabilities, and at the same time will also greatly improve the experience of your applications," the company said in an email, as reported by Computer World.

When MediaTek unveiled its processor last month, it said that it has produced a “true” octa-core processor since all of its cores can simultaneously be used to execute processes, unlike existing octa-core solutions, which can only activate half of their CPU cores at once. The company also claims that the chip will help reduce the power consumption and improves stability in processing applications. The processor will debut in fourth quarter of 2013.

In the past, Qualcomm did defend its chips from rivals boasting more cores. Now both the companies are competing to grab a bigger share of the chip market for Smartphones and tablets by releasing new chips for both high and lower-end devices.

Qualcomm has been riding on the success of its Snapdragon chips, which are part of HTC One, Samsung Galaxy S4, Nexus 4 and the new Nexus 7. While MediaTek chips are being used by Acer, Lenovo, and local Chinese Smartphone vendor Xiaomi.
