The Deal: $605 million

The deal was sealed last year, as Microsoft agreed to cash around $605 million in Barnes & Noble Inc's Nook e-reader and college textbook business for a time period of five years. The investment cannot be listed under success because Nook still trails behind e-reader front runner, Amazon’s Kindle.

The Deal: More than $1 billion

One of the most anticipated deals in the tech world, Microsoft paid more than $1 billion to Finnish mobile giant, Nokia, agreeing on a deal to build mobile phones running Windows software in 2011. The after math is still not so satisfying because Windows phones have failed to create a mark in the ever dominating mobile market by the iPhones and Androids.
