Indian Startups Offer Animal Lovers An Alternative To Leather

Baggit is another popular startup in the same sector. Founded and incorporated in Mumbai by Nina Lekhi, 46, Baggit sells only vegan bags. The idea was powered by Lekhi’s mother with 7000 which made the seed capital for the business. After a lot of hard work and research, the company was founded and worked as an internet startup and then later on moved to the retail space. The company makes over 12 crore and has a great fan following.

"The artificial leather industry complements us and we have now taken them as members," said Sanjay Kumar, regional director at the Council for Leather Exports who estimates the current market for artificial leather at less than 2 per cent of the $10-billion leather industry in India.

Customers maybe a little hesitant to accept the product but the increasing awareness on animal rights are actually helping these businesses. Other startups in the same sector are - Senso Vegetarian Shoes, Beyond Skin, Zalando, TOMS and MooShoes and most of these startups use polyurethane, polyvinyl chloride and cork oak as alternatives to leather.
