Bangalore: “Guru Devo Bhava” is a sanskrit phrase that denotes the importance of a Teacher (guru) in our lives by calling them as Gods. There are tons of emotional and inspiring stories based on the teacher-student relationships in Hindu mythology like the Ekalavya and Dronacharya or the Aruni and Dhoumya episodes.

But in reality, young children in India find it difficult to attend regular schools due to poverty. In eastern India, particularly in the tribal regions of Orissa there are thousands of young children between of 5 and 20 who never had the privilege to step inside a school. In a recent report filed by Fred de Sam Lazaro on pbs.org, he personally visited one of the schools and was surprised to see an entrepreneur taking the initiative to eradicate this problem by providing education and food for over 18,000 tribal children through his institution called The Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS).

KISS was founded in July 1993 by Dr. Achyuta Samanta and since its inception it has given knowledge to a great number of students. ‘The 18,000 students at the Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences have two things in common, they come from India's so-called tribal communities, and they're extremely poor,’ said the report.
