Indian Army Warriors who Define Courage

Company Havildar Major Piru Singh

Piru Singh was a brave soldier who amidst immense odds was instrumental in recapturing the village of Tithwal in the hills of Kashmir during the 1947 Indo-Pak War.

During the war, the rival troops had attacked and captured the village of Tithwal and positioned themselves well with machine gun nests covering all possible attack points. Major Piru Singh was part of Rajputana Rifles which was asked to recapture this post on July of 1948.

The only possible path that led to the enemy post was a thin ridge which would funnel his team and expose them in direct line of fire by the enemy guns. And on the other side of the ridge was a life threatening abyss.

On the way to the top, nearly half of Piru’s company fell prey to the intense firing by the enemies. Unfazed by the loss, he advanced shouting “Raja Ramchandra Ki Jai”. This bravery lifted the spirits of the other men in the company and encouraged them to charge forward.
