Indian Army Warriors who Define Courage

Sepoy Kanshi Ram

Sepoy Kanshi Ram was posted at the Tsengjong area NEFA (present day Arunachal Pradesh) during the Indo-China war. The Chinese attacked his post on October, 1962. Armed with a light machine gun and unfazed by the rampaging Chinese, he inflicted heavy casualties on the enemies. He fought on valiantly and withstood the first wave of attacks by the Chinese. But the enemies were determined to capture the post and came back with heavy mortar support. They managed to injure Kanshi Ram, but not his sprits and he continued his battle with the enemies along with his platoons.

A top ranked Chinese officer along with four higher ranked associates approached Sepoy Kanshi Ram and shouted to the men in the trench to surrender the position. Sepoy Kansi Ram shouted back at the Chinese and asked them to surrender. By this time, he was running low on ammunitions, but he managed to hurl a grenade and killed the enemy officer along with the three associates. In the meantime, other Chinese soldiers closed in on the trench and one of them tried to grab Kansi Ram’s gun, while another fired at him injuring him again. In spite of his wounds, he held onto his gun and pushed the enemy soldiers so skillfully that they fell down and then the sepoy seized a loaded automatic rifle from the enemy and came back to his associates with this rifle, along with his own light machine gun. This rifle was the first enemy weapon seized by the 7 infantry brigade during the war. And for this valiant act, Sepoy Kanshi Ram was honored with Mahaveer Chakra.
