However, it would be a downright lunacy for Iran to play its terror plots in the Indian soil as the base of its extra-territorial attack on Israel. India is one of the few major economies opposing the sanctions imposed on Iran and has even bluntly rejected the calls from U.S. to abide by the sanctions. Foreign Secretary Ranjan Mathai in his recent U.S. visit had made the stand quite clear that India cannot break its oil trade with Iran and Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee had passed the same message earlier.

While this move by the Shia state Iran would sound a sheer idiocy, it would be noted that Iran’s secret activities in the Indian territory is not something very new. Iran had been trying to influence opinion makers in India, including journalists and policy thinktank officials in the past, reports Venky Vembu from Firstpost. These attempts were to promote an “anti-American” outlook among the large Indian population and to influence the foreign policy of the country to acquire an anti-U.S. but pro-Iran lean in decision makings.

“Iran has been buying off journalists, clerics and editors in Shia-populated areas of Uttar Pradesh and Kashmir, doling out large sums to stoke anti-Americanism,” reveals the article quoting an Indian diplomat who disclosed this to U.S. officials in 2007. The diplomat also has reportedly suggested that “Iran is focusing squarely on influential elite audiences in Delhi, with a view to shaping the debate of India’s (nuclear energy) policy and the (Indo-U.S.) nuclear deal,” the article says.
