Delhi and Mumbai Among Top Four World Cities With Excess Population

Among all the mega cities Dhaka is reported to show the maximum growth. It was once at 23rd place on the world list. Now it has moved to the ninth place in 2010 and is expected to be the world’s fifth largest urban region in 2025. Karachi, a city in the vicinity of India, is also one of the cities showing rapid growth, it has moved from 21st position to the tenth place in 2010 and by 2025 it will be on the ninth place.

Another Indian city, Kolkata has dropped a place from its seventh position but it will continue to remain at this place until 2025.

Unlike the above cities New York and Mexico City will show a drop in their position on the list and move to the bottom ten in the next ten years or more. Two decades back these cities were the two biggest urban conglomerations.

The situation is quite alarming, if the cities get oversized, it will surely be hard to handle the population expansion. Yet there is a sign of relief, as many of the cities on the top position of the list are expected to show decrease in the growth rate. As in the case of Tokyo, the present size is unaffected with nil rate of increase in population from 2010 to 2050.
