Is Your Workplace Gay-Friendly?

Bangalore: Out gay employees are likely to be happier and more satisfied with their jobs compared to their closeted counterparts working in corporate, reveals the first annual survey on workplace inclusion of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) employees done by the advocacy group and think-tank Mission for Indian Gay & Lesbian Empowerment (MINGLE). Just 12 percent of employees belonging to the community think that their workplace environment is LGBT friendly, 57 percent feel its neutral and 31 percent think its not LGBT friendly at all.

Out gay employees are more likely to be productive and have better interactions with their managers and team mates, while having greater loyalty to the organization. 80 percent out gay employees said they have not faced any discrimination from company authorities or managers because of your sexual orientation and 50 percent of them think that being closeted has an impact on the work productivity. 63.3 percent says they haven't faced any discrimination from at workplace from other co-workers, but 54.3 percent of them have heard homophobic comments at their workplace and a vast majority of these comments (77.7 percent) came from their co-workers. The study revealed that the workplace environment for LGBT employees is the corporate world worse than the attitude of the outside world as it is found that a third of LGBT respondents said they face harassment at the workplace and nearly 80 percent have heard homophobic comments in their offices. On the other hand, most of the LGBT employees outside did not face discrimination from their managers.
