Mehran: Lived in the Airport for 18 Years

Mehran Karimi Nassiri is an Iranin refugee who lived from 1988 to 2006 in the departure lounge of Terminal one of Charles de Gaulle Airport, Paris.

He was expelled from Iran following which was granted a refugee status by UN high commission which allows him to reside in any European countries. But claimed to have a British parent, he decided to settle in U.K. But he lost his passport and documents en route and was sent back by the British immigration. He was arrested by the French, but then released as his entry to the airport was legal and he had no country of origin to be returned to; thus began his residency at Terminal 1.

Nasseri had his luggage at his side, and spent his time reading, writing in his diary, or studying economics.  He received food and newspapers from employees of the airport. He has never been stuck in the transit area and was therefore free to move.

He was reportedly the inspiration behind the 2004 movie Terminal. Mehran now lives in a charity shelter in Paris.
