50 Percent of Class 5 Kids Can't Read Class 2 Books

The key findings from the survey also revealed that India made an impressive progress with increased enrollment figures in rural India. 96.7 percent of all 6-14 year olds in rural India are enrolled in schools.

It was noted that Bihar out of school numbers, dropped from 17.6 percent in 2006 to 4.3 percent in 2011. Rajasthan also showed a decline from 18.9 percent in 2006 to 8.9 percent in 2011. Uttar Pradesh showed the least progress with 11.1 percent in 2006 to 9.7 percent in 2011. It was also noted that a substantial number of five year old children were enrolled in schools. The All India figure was seen at 57.8 percent for 2011.

Another interesting finding from the survey revealed that private school enrollment is on the rise in most states. Private school enrollment nationally rose in the 6-14 age groups from 18.7 percent in 2006 to 25.6 percent in 2011.This increase is visible in all states except Bihar. The report also suggests that between 30 to 50 percent of children in rural areas of Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Punjab, Jammu & Kashmir, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh are enrolled in private schools.

The survey indicated that on the national level children's attendance showed a decline from 73.4 percent in 2007 to 70.9 percent in 2011 in rural primary schools. In primary schools of Bihar, average attendance of children was 59.0 percent in 2007 and 50.0 percent in 2011. While in Madhya Pradesh this figure fell from 67.0 percent in 2007 to 54.5 percent in 2011 and in Uttar Pradesh from 64.4 percent in 2007 to 57.3 percent in 2011.
