10 Women Who Made a Mark in Indian Politics



Sushma Swaraj
Sushma Swaraj is the chief of opposition in Lok Sabha. She is the six term Member of Parliament and three times MLA. She has also been the former Union Cabinet Minister and the former Chief Minister of Delhi in 1998 for a short span of two month. Despite the ups and downs in her career, it can’t be denied that this hard talking politician holds a position of power in the BJP clan. A lawyer by profession, Sushma Swaraj began her practice as an advocate before the Indian Supreme Court in 1973. She joined politics as a member of the Haryana Legislative Assembly in 1977. Since then she has held several positions in the central government. Now, Sushma Swaraj is being seen as the BJP’s potential prime ministerial candidate as well.  

Brinda Karat
Brinda Karat quit her job with Air India in London to work for the communist cause after returning to India in 1971. In the same year she joined the communist party of India (Marxist) CPI (M). In her early political tenure, Brinda mainly focused on trade unions. She became the first woman member of the CPI (M) Politburo in 2005. She has also held other posts like general secretary of the All India Democratic Women’s Association and its Vice President. Known for her candor, Brinda has authored the Survival and Emancipation: Notes from Indian Women’s Struggles.
