Facebook's New Headache: 30 Percent of India Access Only through Mobile Phones

Bangalore: Well, it seems like India like to stay online through their mobile phones rather than PCs, at least in accessing Facebook. Emily White, Facebook’s Director of Mobile Partnerships, revealed that 30% of its Indian users access the service only through mobile phones.

It may not be a good news for Facebook, which is struggling to monetize in the mobile platform. The trend is catching up as the company observed 30% of new registrations from the country were through mobile phones.

In its IPO filing, the social network stated that India accounted for the third fastest growing user base. But the per-user revenue keeps on falling for the country. Facebook reported that monthly active users in India more than doubled from March 2011 to March 2012.

Facebook had 51 million MAUs (Monthly Active Users) in India as of March 31, 2012, The latest reports would imply that more than 15 million Indian Facebook users access the service only through their mobile phones.

Emily also said that 9 out of 10 people who use Facebook in Africa, access it through their mobile phones.

Overall, as the universal trend is shifting towards mobile phone access, Facebook will have to speed up its mobile monetization efforts. The company, which was earlier reluctant to fill the mobile’s with ads for keeping it uncluttered, had changed its mind last week and started its steps to make money from mobile platforms.
