Facebook To Acquire Oculus VR, Sees Future In 3D Virtual-Reality


BANGALORE: Facebook seems to be on buying spree, after its recent $19 billion WhatsApp buyout, the world’s largest social network is to acquire Oculus VR, the maker of virtual-reality headset Oculus Rift for $2 billion. Apparently the social networking giant sees big future in 3D virtual-reality and the deal is to be accomplished by end of second quarter. It will comprised of $400 million in cash and 23.1 million shares of Facebook and it will be the first hardware company to be bought by Facebook.

“Virtual-reality could emerge as the next social and communications platform,” Mark Zuckerberg, CEO Facebook, said in a conference call with analysts and media on Tuesday, reports Reuters. "The history of our industry is that every 10 or 15 years there's a new major computing platform, whether it's the PC, the Web or now mobile," he added.

"We're making a long-term bet that immersive, virtual and augmented reality will become a part of people's daily life," Zuckerberg said, wearing an Oculus Rift was "different than anything I've ever experienced in my life."
