Facebook To Acquire Oculus VR, Sees Future In 3D Virtual-Reality

Zuckerberg said that the software and services will be the main business drivers for the company and that the virtual-reality headsets will be used to drive revenue anything from advertizing to sales of virtual goods. While Oculus VR will act as independent entity, he stressed on expanding the company’s reach beyond gaming and into the areas like architecture, automobiles, marketing and education. "Imagine enjoying a court side seat at a game, studying in a classroom of students and teachers all over the world or consulting with a doctor face-to-face - just by putting on goggles in your home," he said.

Oculus VR was a Kickstarter program founded by self confessed virtual-reality enthusiast Palmer Luckey driving small funds from people on the popular fundraising platform. The company’s going-to-be $2 billion acquisition will make Oculus VR one of the most successful companies to ever emerge from Kickstarter program.

The company’s first virtual-reality product Oculus Rift, which was demoed in many gaming and tech events, is slated to be shipped by July for $350 each piece. The device is apparently to compete with Sony’s recently unveiled virtual-reality headset for Playstation 4 gaming consoles.
