San Francisco-based Airware has gained prominence from VC companies and other investors as it has built a software and hardware platform where companies can benefit by developing their own commercial drones. Airware has also gained immense recognition from the NASA.  They partnered with the U.S. space agency in September 2014 to create an air traffic system to manage unmanned aircraft that will regulate both high- and low-altitude operations.

Airwave Founded in 2011 generated over $40 million in funding from multiple investors, the most recent being an unidentified strategic investment from GE Ventures. Other prominent investors include Andreessen Horowitz, First Round Capital and Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers.

San Francisco-based Skycatch have their attention drawn towards building both high- and low-altitude data capture systems and are also offering software to analyze the data. One such initial application is by offering 2D and 3D image data of construction sites by means of remote drones. Komatsu, which is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of heavy machinery, is intending to incorporate Skycatch's independent aerial data capture system into its business. The startup has generated close to $20 million in funding, the most recent being $13.2 million in May 2014.
