Start-Ups Rise As New Competitors For The Established Firms

Big Basket, presently receives more than 10000 orders in a day compared to its rivals who are still struggling to get a 1000 or little more.

If considered the financial values, then Big Basket presently stands at 1519crores, while Grofers limits to 728crore.

Menon also confirmed the profit margin of Big Basket to be around 20percent while others range between 2percent to 4percent. The competitors of Big Basket definitely need to pull up their socks.

Another rebel in the hyper local e-commerce industry, Zopnow extended up to three cities with an investment of $20,000 (Rs12.6 lakh) for each city. Mukesh Singh, the company's Co-founder and CEO, a PhD dropout from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, discloses the success key as “Our warehouse was carrying around 10,000 products, but HyperCity stores (ZopNow's onground partner) carry over 100,000.”

Zopnow’s recent initiative 'Kirana Now' program allows local stores to enlist on the website for display and access.

Experts believe this online grocery retailing contest mainly depends on product quality and range, packaging, delivery times and customer service.

Fusions or acquisition over another has already penetrated in this industry. Gurgaon-based competitor Mygreenbox was bought by Grofers earlier this month. Godrej's Nature Basket acquired Ekstop.com and also tied up with ecommerce giants Snapdeal and Amazon to bring its services online.

Co-founder of YouMart, a new player in the business and a marketing professor of IIM Bangalore said, “When national or regional players with a technological edge enter a smaller city, they can buy out local players and get a ready customer base.”

As entries keep happening, in this blooming online industry of India, it’s now time to see how big it happens and who leads the game.
