5 'Unreasonable' Start-ups That are Thriving Lives


Lucky Iron Fish (founded in 2012):

Iron deficiency is a serious health problem in Cambodia, so Lucky Iron Fish, a startup based in Ontario, came up with a simple an inexpensive solution:  A tiny fish (a Cambodian good luck symbol) made out of cast-iron that releases edible iron when boiled for 10 minutes, and can provide 75 percent of a families necessary iron intake.

The process is easy, justboil the fish for ten minutes, and cook food in the iron rich water.

The firm joins the Unreasonable Institute in July, having helped more than 30,000 people with their low cost Lucky Iron fishes.

Koe Koe Tech (founded in 2013):

Cofounders Yar Zar Min Htoo and Micahel Lwin launched the MayMay app to address their country Myanmar’s high child and maternal mortality rates.

The app sends out alerts to the nearest available doctor for each stage of a pregnancy; it also uses GPS to track down nearby doctors in case of an emergency, and offers a hotline to connect to experienced medical professionals all over Myanmar.

Koe Koe Tech, the parent company behind the MayMay app will also join the institute in July and will have its app preloaded onto 600,000 low cost smartphones to be distributed in Myanmar next month.

"We hope to have at least 1 million users of our app within three years," said Lwin.
