FIFA World Cup: Five Memorable Semi Finals

17 June 1970: Italy vs. West Germany in Mexico City

Italy was in finals for the first time since 1938 and the eighth minute goal by Roberto Boninsegna was like the winning goal by Italians. There was a crowd of more than 102,000 people in the Azteca Stadium. This match is known as the game of century.

Soon the match was equalized by the German sweeper Karl-Heinz Schnellinger. It was his first and only goal in the tournament. Gerd Mueller scored a goal just after four minutes of extra time and West Germany was ahead of Italy by 2-1.

Because of Tarcisio Burgnich’s goal after four minutes and Luigi Riva’s goal Italy was ahead again. Gerd Muller tied up the match with his goal for West Germany. As the TV cameras were replaying the goal by Muller, Gianni Rivera shot the winning goal for Italy in 111th minute.
