Why is Politics Unappealing To Indian Youth?

BENGALURU: We Indians can never run short of words to talk about politics and politicians. There are many who can sit back in the couch and pass lazy comments over the politicians’ inability to run a sensible system. When it comes to taking up the ‘responsibility’ to make a difference, none of these couch potatoes rise to the need.

The world witnessed an eighteen year old girl Saira Blair, who is elected to West Virginia State’s House of Delegates. A 23 year old Indian American, Neeraj Antani won the U.S. midterm election. Can we imagine this kind of development in India, in the near future? No. One cannot blame the youth to choose other professions over politics as the societal structure is such that it doesn’t encourage youth entering politics. An average Indian’s notion about politics is that, ‘it is not my duty to change the system, but it is the politician’s duty.’ This way we are creating a new generation which grows up with a wrong belief that politics is not a career option. By which we are putting our own future in trouble.

We fail to understand that it is everyone’s fundamental duty to contribute for a better India. When a young man of 20-25 years old wishes to get into politics, the immediate reply would be ‘seriously?’ along with an evil laugh. And we lost a young mind there. Many are of the view that to get into politics, basic qualification is to be rich or have a political background. Is it really true? Is it just a money game? Politics is not that bad a career, in fact it is the only challenging and hardworking career option.
