BENGALURU: World Health Organization is the directing and coordinating authority for health within the United Nations system. It is WHO’s responsibility to shape the health research agenda, setting norms and standards, articulating policy options, providing technical support to countries and monitoring and assessing health trends.

Many have stereotyped that top positions in organizations such as WHO would be filled by U.S and European members. But breaking that stereotype, WHO has proved that all deserved candidates irrespective of their place of origin have a place in top, as reported by Business Insider.

Dr. Shekhar Saxena:

Dr. Shekhar Saxena is currently the Director of World Health Organization, Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse. Dr. Saxena is an ace psychiatrist having an experience of over three decades. He is a certified expert in the field of research and program management, service delivery and information systems in the areas of mental health. His key centers of work in this field are low and middle income countries and his responsibilities at WHO involve focusing on implementation of the WHO Comprehensive Mental Health Action Plan for 2013-2020, which includes pushing the agenda for mental health, neurological and substance use disorders. Dr. Saxena is also one among the writers of the World Health Report 2001 on mental health.
