Jadav Payeng

Jean Giono’s The Man Who Planted Trees came to life as the world came to know about this man. Jadav Payeng planted 550 hectare forest all by himself amidst Brahmaputra. The forest serves as a home for many endangered species. The floods in 1979 that brought ashore many dead reptiles changed the life of the 16-year old Jadav.

When the forest department put down his request to grow more trees, he started leading a isolated life at sandbar where he planted and grew trees for few years and even brought in ants to fertilize the soil. Soon he created a forest out of it.
