India’s Kulandei Francis was one among six others who won the prestigious Raman Magsasay Award for the year 2012. Recognized for his visionary zeal, he had profound faith in community energies and sustained programs in pursuing the holistic economic empowerment of thousands of women and their families in rural India. He emancipated thousands of women in rural India who now are self employed—thanks to this legendary man. Kulandei’s childhood was not a bed of roses; he was from poverty. As a child, Kulandei decided upon dedicating his life for the upliftment of the poor. Having witnessed his own mother struggle to make a living, he is now father of thousands of such women.
