10 Indian Films that Deserved Oscar Mention

ElipathayamElipathayam (1981):

Last legs of feudal rule in India cannot be overlooked and Adoor Gopalakrishnan's most accomplished film traces decaying feudal order in Kerala. Elipathayam revolves around Unni, a middle-aged man who cannot pace with the changing world around him. Unfortunately in 1982, no Indian film was sent to the Oscars. Some view that India fails to send the right movies and if at all there is any nomination, most of them come from Bollywood. The biggest losers of such bias are the regional film-makers.

NayaganNayagan (1987):

Nayagan, which means the Hero, is a Tamil crime and drama film, one among the best of Mani Ratnam’s movies that could have gone for the Oscars but did not go. The movie had won three National Awards. The lead role played by extra-ordinary actor Kamal Hassan, an actor who deserves Oscar more than anybody else in the country.

Seven films starring Kamal Hassan were submitted by India for the Oscars. The story line is loosely based on the real-life Bombay underworld don Varadarajan Mudaliar, and sympathetically depicts the struggle of South Indians living in Bombay. It is one among the TIME’s ‘All-Time 100 Best Films’. Nayagan was officially selected by India to contend in the 60th Academy Awards.
