Ever since the economic downturn impacted IT companies; Linux has emerged as a natural choice for adoption in the attempt to reduce operating costs. This choice is made even more appealing when one considers the usage of virtualization in cloud technology, where multiple instances of the same operating system may be deployed for different purposes on the same physical hardware. A company wishing to derive these benefits will need skilled personnel to setup and maintain systems. One problem encountered by decision makers is the multiple Linux
distributions that are currently available and under active development. Many Linux distributions are developed by volunteer developers and may not be immediately accessible for support calls.
Moreover, as many as two or three versions of the same distribution may be released within the same year. This may sound good from a usage point-of-view. But, deployment in the enterprise will mean disruptions during upgrades and other unforeseen compatibility issues.

However, companies adopting Linux would prefer some "hand-holding" while making the transition and a predictable long term release cycle that is both stable and easily supported. This brings the focus of available Linux distributions to those that are maintained by companies that cater to the needs of the enterprise and are actively participating in various projects in the open-source area. As of now, two major names
   Stand Out:
   Red Hat and Novell.

Red Hat provides the globally renowned Red Hat Enterprise Linux, currently with version 6. While usage is an essential requirement, skills needed for system administration are a little more involved. Further, it is possible that companies may be transitioning from other proprietary platforms to Linux and may be already aware about system administration duties. The newly re-designed curriculum recognizes this aspect and eases system administrators very easily to Linux. New users are also made comfortable by using an initial focus on easy-to-use graphical utilities and then shifting to other involving topics. The usage of virtualization is all through the course and not limited to one unit. Scenario-based exercises get the candidates to apply acquired knowledge. The new curriculum designed by Red Hat is meant to be immediately useful in the workplace. While training prepares the candidate for the tasks, certification in a performance-based exam assures a company of a candidate's ability to address the requirements of the
 enterprise.

The newest certification available under the Red Hat curriculum is the Red Hat Certified System Administrator. This certification tests a candidate's ability to setup and maintain systems with Red Hat Enterprise Linux to provide basic services. The next level of certification is the popular Red Hat Certified Engineer. This certification strives to demonstrate a candidate's ability to configure common network services and configure basic security for them using the tools available in RHEL.

Other specialist certifications include the Red Hat Certified Virtualization Administrator and the Red Hat Certified Security Specialist. The RHCVA prepares the candidate to setup and maintain virtual machines in a data centre. The RHCSS presents specialized skills for use in environments that demand higher security requirements.

Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise is another distribution that has proved itself in the enterprise. Currently running at version 11, it is very sophisticated in its approach to address all system administration requirements. A remarkably robust system administration utility handles all tasks equally well in graphical and command-line environments. The Novell curriculum provides manuals filled with screenshots and in-depth explanations that aid in candidate's learning. Additionally, Novell curriculum also shows the similarities and differences in the desktop and server implementations. There is also a strong focus on shell scripting that helps system administrators plan out some automation of tasks.  With certified faculty and capable hardware, Linux Training & Certification is ready to showcase the benefits of adopting enterprise-grade software and latest technologies.
