Will the 2014 General Elections be Influenced by Social Media?


As for India and the enthusiastic Indians, their involvement in the political agendas seem strong and the coming election will change the ‘word of mouth’ to words on social networking sites and the discussions may create positive vibes  in the crowd or it can lead to controversies, anything is possible. In India there are more than 900 million mobile phone connections and over 130 million broadband connections. The market is flooded with newer, easier and cheaper Smartphone’s, whose features are partly or completely internet enabled as reported by N Madhavan for Hindustan Times.

50 percent of India’s population is young and net savvy. The accessing of social media has been made easy by allowing users to use Facebook, Twitter, Google plus and Text messaging in Indian languages, breaking the barrier set by language constrain.

The flexibility to access social media will in turn enthrall the Indians to be an active participant in the coming 2014 elections. Playing a significant role the social media can be a site to post a comment or share the feeling or just ‘like’ the opinion of others. The new age of elections with all the social media build up can make the election more intriguing and it will set in the new trend of net election in India.
