VMware Purchases Nicira: Is It a Good Move?

VMware has been a pioneer by giving virtualization to servers and it believes that Nicira’s technology will give it a chance to do the same with networks and boost its image in the market as an organization on diversified fronts. VMware sees network virtualization as the next step in virtualization of datacenters. When a virtual machine can be set up in minutes, setting up the networking requires the configuration of thousands of routers and switches. Nicira addresses this complexity by enabling customers to build a virtual networking layer.

SDN has been a trending topic this year and VMware’s acquisition of Nicira has put a substantial amount of pressure on Cisco. Maintaining the same, VMware has made it clear that it is committed to uphold Nicira’s openness and will be bringing additional values to OpenStack, CloudStack and other cloud related communities.
