The U.S. parent company Union Carbide had escaped criminal liability and its chairman Warren Anderson was let go scot free after the gas disaster which took over 15,000 lives in 1984. Soon after the verdict, the U.S. officials expressed optimism that the verdict would not affect the bilateral ties between the two countries.
