The Worst Security Mishaps of 2012

MARCH:

The month of March started with reports on a weeklong attack on the Vatican websites and its internal email servers.

The arrest of LulzSec group members by the FBI and the European law enforcement agencies led to a huge outrage from the hackers. Later it was revealed that LulzSec leader Hector Xavier Monsegur, alias "Sabu," turned in his friends as part of a deal to work as a stooge for the FBI after being arrested in New York City last year.

The end of March saw another hack story by LulzSec, this time by the name “Reborn” who leaked out more than 160,000 account details from a dating website for military personnel, MilitarySingles.com.

Certain reports claimed that contactless bank cards from Barclays bank can allow customers to steal and do fraudulent work with their own concern. Later Barclays had to dismiss these reports.

Security firm, Kaspersky Lab found a malware code embedded into a digital certificate owned by Swiss firm Compavi AG and issued by Symantec. Symantec later agreed with the fault saying that the private key owned by Compavi AG was stolen, either by an insider or by an outsider.
