“A weak economy and falling rupee took their toll on the wealth of Indian billionaires this year,”-wrote Forbes while discussing about India’s performance in the billionaires list. The 56 billionaires from India are together worth $191.5 billion. The biggest gainer from India is Shiv Nadar of HCL and the biggest losers are the Ruia brothers. Here’re the top five performers from India.

Mukesh Ambani: In 2008, Mukesh Ambani was world’s fifth richest person with a net worth of $43 billion. This year, he is ranked at number 40 in the current list with a net worth of $41.6 billion. In the last year, his fortune dwindled by $2.9 billion.

The major contributing factor for this decline is the weak Indian economy. He remains the richest among the Indians. Last year he got additional spectrum worth $1.8 billion for his 4G operations. The Indian government has declared a hike in gas prices, which is expected to benefit him greatly.

Laxmi Niwas Mittal: With a net worth of $16.7 billion, Laxmi Niwas Mittal is the 52nd richest man on earth. Last year, his rank in the list was 41. No doubt Arecellor-Mittal is passing through a tough phase owing to debt burden and decline in demand. Even then, Arcellor Mittal acquired an Alabama based steel company for $1.55 billion. ArcellorMittal is at an advanced stage of land acquisition for a steel plant in south India. But the year saw the cancellation of its project in eastern India. The good news is, instead of all these upheavals, ArcellorMittal remains the world’s largest steel producer.
