Railway Disasters: India's Shame



October 29, 2005: 

Over 100 people were killed when a passenger train derailed and fell into an overflowing river in Nalgonda district of Andhra Pradesh in southern India. The derailment occurred at about 4:15 a.m. Heavy rain apparently had washed out a portion of the track. Some train carriages overturned into the flooded waters, trapping people inside. The tragedy occurred in the eve of Diwali, the festival of lights and most of the people on the train were travelling to celebrate the festival.

October 21, 2009:

22 people were killed and 26 injured as Goa Express headed towards Delhi rammed into the stationary Mewar Express near Mathura, some 150km south-east of New Delhi . The accident occurred at about 5 a.m. on a Wednesday. The engine of the Goa Express jumped on the last bogey of the Mewar Express, which was stationary on the same track. Traffic was disrupted and several trains had to be diverted.
